 n this talk we describe four families of polynomials related to the\nspect
 rum of a graph. First\, some known main results involving such\npolynomia
 ls\, such as the spectral excess theorem characterizing\ndistance-regulari
 ty\, are discussed. Second\, some new results giving\nbounds for the $k$-
 independence number $\\alpha_k$ of a graph are\npresented. In this contex
 t\, we comment on some relationships between\nthe inertia (Cvetkovi\\`c) a
 nd ratio (Hoffman) bounds of $\\alpha_k$.
