 7\n\nABSTRACT: We discuss a variety of questions and results pertaining to
 \nconjectures of Geelen from 2021 on the unavoidable flats in matroids\nof
  sufficiently high rank. We will also explore the differences in how\nsuch
  questions are posed for various classes of matroids\, why such\ndifferenc
 es are necessary\, and how they could potentially be\nreconciled. A result
  for the class of binary matroids and an outline\nof its proof will be dis
 cussed in detail. Joint work with Jim Geelen.
