 501\n\nABSTRACT: In 1957\, Motzkin conjectured that the maximum number of\
 nfaces possible for a polytope on n vertices in d-space is achieved by\nth
 e convex hull of n points on the moment curve in d-space.  This\nconjectu
 re\, called the Upper Bound Conjecture\, was proved by McMullen\nin 1970 a
 nd generalized by Stanley in 1975.  On the road to Stanley's\nproof\, a c
 orrespondence between squarefree monomial ideals and\nsimplicial complexes
  was born.  That correspondence is called the\nStanley--Reisner correspon
 dence.  It has come to occupy a central\nplace in combinatorial algebraic
  geometry.
