SUMMARY:Algebraic Graph Theory - Josse van Dobben de Bruyn
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Gonality of graphs – a survey\n\nSPEAKER:\n Josse van
Dobben de Bruyn\n\nAFFILIATION: \n Technical University of Denmark (DTU)\n
\nLOCATION:\n Please contact Sabrina Lato for Zoom link.\n\nABSTRACT: Over
the past 30 or so years\, the realization that graphs\ncan be viewed as d
iscrete analogues of Riemann surfaces has led to a\nfruitful interplay bet
ween algebraic geometry\, tropical geometry\, and\ngraph theory. Among oth
er things\, this has led to the study of new\ngraph parameters\, including
various notions of the _gonality_ of a\ngraph. In addition to its ties w
ith algebraic and tropical geometry\,\ngraph gonality also turns out to ha
ve connections with chip-firing\ngames\, structural graph theory\, and par
ametrized complexity. In this\ntalk\, I will introduce the two most common
types of graph gonality\n(namely\, _divisorial gonality_ and _stable gon
ality_) and survey the\nmost important results and open problems in this f
ield\, including the\nconnections with the aforementioned topics.
