SUMMARY:Tutte Colloquium - Bruno Lourenço
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Oddities in the pursuit of self-duality\n\nSPEAKER:\n B
runo Lourenço\n\nAFFILIATION\n The Institute of Statistical Mathematics\
n\nLOCATION:\n MC 5501\n\nABSTRACT: Certain important cones in conic opti
mization are\nself-dual\, e.g.\, the positive semidefinite matrices and th
e\nnonnegative orthant. In this talk we will address the problem of\ndeter
mining which convex cones are self-dual in a broad sense\, which\nallows
changing the underlying inner product if necessary. We will\ndescribe some
recent progress on this question for polyhedral cones\nand discuss some u
nexpected connections. In particular\, we will show a\ncurious result conn
ecting self-dual polyhedral cones and extreme rays\nof doubly nonnegative
matrices. We will also discuss how semidefinite\nprogramming can be used
to search for self-dual polyhedral cones. Time\nallowing\, we will describ
e new results on the related problem of\ndetermining the automorphisms of
certain cones of interest.\n\nThis talk is based on joint works with Joã
 o Gouveia and Masaru Ito.
