SUMMARY:Algebraic and enumerative combinatorics seminar-John Smith
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:TITLE:Coefficient Positivity and Analytic Combinatorics\n\nSpea
 ker\n John Smith\n\nAffiliation\n University of Waterloo\n\nLocation\n MC
5479\n\n ABSTRACT: Given a rational function analytic at the origin\, are
its\npower series coefficients positive? We first motivate this question\
nwith historical background\, examples and connections to decidability\nqu
estions in combinatorics. We then present a method for proving\npositivity
for a certain class of multivariate rational functions\, by\nconstructing
explicit error bounds for an asymptotic expansion using\nanalytic combina
torics in several variables. After applying our method\nto a couple of exa
mples in the literature\, including re-proving a\n(recently proved) conjec
ture of Gillis\, Reznick and Zeilberger from\n1983\, we discuss the feasib
ility of completing certain steps in our\nanalysis using methods from comp
uter algebra.\n\nTHERE WILL BE A PRE-SEMINAR PRESENTING RELEVANT BACKGROUN
D AT THE\nBEGINNING GRADUATE LEVEL STARTING AT 1PM
