SUMMARY:Graphs and Matroids - Matthew Kroeker
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Unavoidable flats in matroids representable over a finit
 e field\n\nSPEAKER:\n Matthew Kroeker\n\nAFFILIATION:\n University of Wate
rloo\n\nLOCATION:\n MC 5417\n\nABSTRACT: For a positive integer k and fini
te field F\, we prove that\nevery simple F-representable matroid with suff
iciently high rank has a\nrank-k flat which either is independent\, or is
 a projective or affine\ngeometry over a subfield of F.  As a corollary\,
we obtain the\nfollowing Ramsey theorem: given an F-representable matroid
of\nsufficiently high rank and any 2-colouring of its points\,  there is
a\nmonochromatic rank-k flat.  This is joint work with Jim Geelen and\nPe
 ter Nelson.
