SUMMARY:Algebraic and enumerative combinatorics seminar-Mike Cummings
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:TITLE:Combinatorial rules for the geometry of Hessenberg variet
 ies\n\nprogressions\n\nSpeaker\n Mike Cummings\n\nAffiliation\n University
  of Waterloo\n\nLocation\n MC 5479\n\n ABSTRACT: \n\nHessenberg varieties
were introduced by De Mari\, Procesi\, and Shayman\nin the early 1990s an
d lie at the intersection of geometry\,\nrepresentation theory\, and combi
natorics.  In 2012\, Insko and Yong\nstudied a class of Hessenberg variet
ies using patch ideals\, a\ntechnique dating back to at least the 1970s fr
om the study of Schubert\nvarieties. In this talk\, we will derive patch i
deals and use them to\nstudy two classes of Hessenberg varieties.  We wil
l see the\ncombinatorics that govern the behaviour of these patch ideals a
nd\ntranslate these results to the geometric setting. Based in part on\nwo
rk with Sergio Da Silva\, Megumi Harada\, and Jenna Rajchgot.\n\nTHERE WIL
L BE A PRE-SEMINAR PRESENTING RELEVANT BACKGROUND AT THE\nBEGINNING GRADUA
 TE LEVEL STARTING AT 1PM\,
