  Let u be a word over the positive integers. Motivated in\npart by a ques
 tion of representation theory\, we study the centralizer\nset C(u)\, which
  consists of words w for which wu and uw are\nKnuth-equivalent. In particu
 lar\, we characterize C(u) when u has few\nletters or is a certain type of
  decreasing sequence\, and we address\nrelated enumerative questions.\n\nT
