 5501\n\nABSTRACT: This talk will begin with a concise introduction to opt
 imal\ncontrol\, viewed as an optimization problem where the decision\nvari
 ables are subject to dynamical constraints. We will then discuss\nthe turn
 pike phenomenon in optimal control problems and show how it\ncan be charac
 terized through the energy-based concept of dissipativity\nof the underlyi
 ng dynamical system. The theoretical results will be\nillustrated in the c
 ontext of linear–quadratic optimal control\nproblems\, both for discrete
  and continuous time dynamics\, where a\ncomplete characterization can be 
 derived in terms of the spectral\nproperties of the system.
