SUMMARY:Algebraic and enumerative combinatorics seminar-Leigh Foster
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Tilings of Benzels (and other finite regions) in the hex
agon\ngrid\n\nSpeaker\n Leigh Foster\n\nAffiliation\n University of Wtaerl
oo\n\nLocation\n MC 6029\n\nABSTRACT: In 1990\, Conway and Lagarias intro
duced tilability criteria\nfor tilability for finite regions of the hexag
on and square grids. In\nthe same year\, Thurston expanded upon their wor
k\, introducing the\nheight function criterion. We will discuss some new
results in\ntilability: A new tilability criteria via the SL_2(C) double
dimer\nmodel\, and enumeration of tilings of special regions called Ben
zels\,\nintroduced in 2020 by Propp\, using a technique called compressio
 n. If\ntime allows\, we will also discuss ongoing work that expands\nThur
ston's height function to stone-and-bone tilings of the hexagon\ngrid.\n\
nTHERE WILL BE A PRE-SEMINAR PRESENTING RELEVANT BACKGROUND AT THE\nBEGINN
ING GRADUATE LEVEL STARTING AT 1:30PM.
