Constant-time quantum computers more powerful than classical counterparts

Quantum computers can solve a linear algebra problem faster than classical computers, according to a new study published in Science. The finding proves that constant-depth quantum circuits are more powerful than their classical counterparts, and provides a new sense of how quantum technology will be a key to more powerful computing.

Optimization techniques guide surgeons at SickKids

Waterloo graduate student David Qian, under the guidance of the Faculty of Mathematics’ Ricardo Fukasawa and Jochen Koenemann, introduced optimization techniques based on integer and dynamic programming to surgeons at SickKids hospital. By applying mathematical optimization algorithms, Qian and team advised doctors on the best surgical cut points to minimize the volume-difference between the surgically modified skull, and an ideal skull.

RBC to open a cybersecurity lab and fund new research at the University of Waterloo

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is opening a cybersecurity lab and investing $1.78 million into research at the University of Waterloo to develop advanced cybersecurity and privacy tools.
