The Communication Requirement, also referred to as the English Language Proficiency Requirement, is a mandatory milestone for all University of Waterloo undergraduate students. Depending on the Faculty, undergraduate students are typically required to fulfil the requirement by the end of their first or second year. Progress in a program may be impeded if the Communication Requirement is not completed.
While information about the Communication Requirement is collected here using data from each Faculty, the Undergraduate Calendar is the authoritative source. Links are provided throughout this web site to the calendar for the current academic year. Students should refer to the Calendar dated for the academic year they enrolled in their undergraduate program.
Once a student has met the Communication Requirement, the milestone will show as "English Proficiency completed" in their unofficial transcript on Quest.
If further information about the Communication Requirement is required, contact the Writing and Communication Centre or an academic advisor. Faculty of Arts students should contact the Arts Undergraduate Office.
