March 2015

From public lectures to signature celebrations such as Canada Day, we're honoured to invite our community to the University of Waterloo.

Cultural Caravan

As part of the Federation of Students International Celebrations Week, last Thursday night the annual Cultural Caravan showcase filled the SLC Great Hall with a vibrant array of colours, costumes, and energy.

This unique festival of diversity adds excitement to our campus community by highlighting different cultures through creative performances. Cultural Caravan has become a University of Waterloo tradition, with a continuous annual turn-out close to 700 people. Spectacular dance and musical routines lit up the stage, demonstrated by a number of student-driven clubs and groups.

Elevating research excellence with Grand River Hospital

Grand River Hospital and the University of Waterloo announced their partnership agreement to enhance health services research on a global scale and in the Waterloo Region.

By joining forces, these strong community leaders will build upon existing research involving the two institutions. Studies to date have included stroke, cancer treatment, traumatic brain injury, and nutrition and aging. Enabling this world-class community hospital research to take place locally will elevate research excellence for both institutions and our community.

Random Acts of Kindness Krew

On Saturday, February 28th, the Federation of StudentsRandom Acts of Kindness Krew helped kick the winter blues by offering their time to shovel driveways in our community for their first ever Shake the Snow event. Polishing up approximately 6 houses with 4 committed volunteers resulted in a successful community-driven adventure for this relatively new campus club.

Inspired by the University of Waterloo’s RAK Day achievements from last fall, club president, Victoria Harkes, felt that such a positive initiative like this could fuel it’s momentum with year-long student and community support.

International Women’s Week

International Women’s Day is an annual worldwide celebration that honors women's achievements, marking March 8th as a time to uphold female success, face challenges head on, and focus greater attention on gender equality to mobilize all people to do their part.

Thousands of events are held across the world, with the hope of inspiring individuals to think globally, but act locally. During the week, there are a number of diverse campus and community activities where the University of Waterloo recognizes and celebrates the importance of this day.

Our campus had opportunities to lean in and get involved in activities like film screenings, interactive sports, and a feminist photo booth during the week of action put on by the Federation of Students service, The Women’s Centre.
