Economic development

Education is the backbone of a robust economy, both here at home and around the globe.

Built on Waterloo’s world-class co-operative education program, commercialization and intellectual property policies, Waterloo students, graduates and faculty are leading regional and global economies through their innovation and entrepreneurism.

The University of Waterloo figures prominently in the dynamic conversation about what makes Waterloo Region like no other. We are actively engaged and partner with policymakers regionally, provincially, and federally through a robust government relations platform. We lead thought-provoking conversations with global influencers through our Waterloo Innovation Summit, establish international research partnerships, and we engage our students in generating real-time solutions in incubators like Velocity and St. Paul’s Greenhouse.

In 2013, PricewaterhouseCoopers prepared an Economic Impact Report that looks at our role in driving prosperity in Waterloo Region and Ontario. Some key findings include:

  • University of Waterloo generates $2.6 billion in total annual spending impacts

  • For every dollar the Government of Ontario spends on the University of Waterloo, the university returns nearly nine times ($8.80) in economic impacts to the province

  • University of Waterloo generates 20,000 jobs in Ontario

  • In 2011, the UWaterloo received $297 million from the Government of Ontario, generating $2.6 billion in spending impacts and more than $1.4 billion in labour income
