The University of Waterloo engages in a number of partnerships that positively impact economic development both at home and around the globe:  

Local government

Our strong connections to our local community and regional decision makers are represented through a number of partnerships with our municipal governments, including:

  • the Region of Waterloo;

  • the City of Waterloo;

  • the City of Kitchener;

  • the City of Cambridge;

  • the City of Stratford

Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade

Waterloo actively contributes to the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and Stratford Chamber's of Commerce as members and sponsors, helping them grow in various ways:

  • Waterloo offers support for the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce physician recruitment strategy, recognizing the integral role of primary health care in attracting and retaining top talent to our community  

  • We sponsor the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and the Business of the Year award through the Chamber's annual Business Excellence Awards

  • UWaterloo members volunteer representation on the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber's Board of Directors to ensure a strategic connection with our community

Accelerator Centre

The Accelerator Centre is an important partner for the University year-round, helping to advance the research and commercialization of technology across campus and support Waterloo startups and students.

Communitech

The University of Waterloo proudly partners with Communitech in a variety of ways. We sponsor a number of events throughout the year, including the Waterloo Innovation Summit, Techtoberfest, the Tech Leadership Conference and Startup Weekend. These partnerships provide opportunities for Waterloo students, faculty, staff, and alumni, to engage in the community’s top annual tech sector events.

Accelerating Social Cause Entrepreneurs

Waterloo acts as a partner and advisor to ASCEnt (Accelerating Social Cause Entrepreneurs), an innovative pilot program offering social entrepreneurs and benefit enterprises a comprehensive program to move companies from idea to sustainable success.

Educational partners

Part of a vibrant post-secondary sector in our community, Waterloo collaborates frequently with both Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College. Together, we inform community planning processes related to economic development, such as the City of Waterloo’s Economic Development Committee and Town and Gown Committee.
