Economic development: Events and outreach

The University of Waterloo is home to a number of events and outreach activities that drive and impact economic development on a regional, national and global scale:  

Waterloo Innovation SummitInitiated in 2013, the Waterloo Innovation Summit engages leading entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, policy-makers and academics in an exclusive conversation focused on finding concrete ways to advance regional and global economies.

Velocity Garage & Foundry operates out of two downtown Kitchener locations, providing mentorship, advice and connections with the local and international startup and venture capital communities. More than 100 past and present companies are part of the Velocity ecosystem; over $90 million in funding has been raised and hundreds of jobs created. Velocity alumni include MappedIn, Kik Interactive, Pebble, Sortable and Thalmic Labs.

St. Paul’s Greenhouse engages students with a passion for social change, providing mentorship opportunities offered by community and campus leaders in order to help create innovative, enterprising solutions for complex social and environmental problems. Greenhouse connects like-minded partners with a shared mandate to support social entrepreneurs, including MaRS, the Centre for Social Innovation, Social Spark, and the Canadian Community Economic Development Network.
