 .\n\nCASSANDRA MARCUSSEN\, PHD STUDENT\n_Harvard John A. Paulson School of
Engineering and Applied Sciences\,\nHarvard University_\n\nWhen can we tr
ust predictions based on random inputs when working with\nreal-world data?
I will introduce quality control algorithms\, which\naccept random inputs
while rejecting inputs for which a prediction is\nsubstantially wrong\, w
ith high probability. I will focus on checking\nwhether permutation patter
n frequencies in a given sequence are close\nto those predicted for i.i.d.
data. A permutation pattern describes\nthe relative order of entries in a
subsequence. For patterns of length\n_k_\, estimating their frequency on
arbitrary inputs requires\nexponentially many queries. I will show that qu
ality control for these\npredictions requires only polynomially many queri
es.\n\n_Based on joint work with Ronitt Rubinfeld and Madhu Sudan._\n\n---

DC 1304. You can also\nattend virtually on Zoom.
