Teaching Stream Faculty
The University of Waterloo and the Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo are pleased to share that they have agreed on the terms of revisions to Policy 76 – Faculty Appointments and Policy 77 – Tenure and Promotion of Faculty Members and related agreements concerning the establishment of a well-defined teaching stream at Waterloo. The target date for implementation is September 1, 2024.
These changes include making regular faculty appointments in two mutually exclusive categories: Tenure Stream and Teaching Stream.
The ranks in the Teaching Stream are:
- Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream
- Associate Professor, Teaching Stream
- Professor, Teaching Stream.
Faculty members in the Teaching Stream will primarily focus on the teaching mission. They are expected to contribute to and advance a culture of teaching excellence and educational innovation that enhances education. Their appointments will be limited to teaching and service, with formal teaching duties assigned in all three terms.
A definite-term appointment is a contractually limited appointment for a specific period, lasting up to five years. Although reappointment is not precluded, a faculty member on a definite-term appointment is not entitled to consideration for reappointment upon the expiration of the term. No additional definite-term appointments can be made beyond the fifth year, although faculty members may be considered for probationary appointments.
