Technovation Waterloo Workshops

Teams must register in order to attend the workshops. Drop-ins will not be admitted.

Technovation is a team event. Participants should form teams prior to registering. If you can’t find a team, register as a team of one and we will try our best to find you a team.

Kick-off Ideation Workshop — Saturday, January 12, 2019
Registration now open.

This workshop introduces the Technovation Challenge and the MIT App Inventor tool — enough to give a sense of what coding is like. The workshop then guides teams through an ideation process to help teams generate and explore ideas for what their app might be about. Most of the material presented in this workshop is the same as last year's workshop.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Girls should have formed their teams.

This workshop is presented in partnership with Shopify.

There will also be an opportunity for teams to meet with a coach to get feedback on their idea or get help setting up MIT App Inventor. Most of the material presented in this workshop is the same as last year's workshop.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Teams should have chosen the idea for their app.

Android SDK Workshop — Tuesday, February 5, 2019

Do you want to learn how to build mobile apps for Android? Young women ages 15+ are invited to learn how to use the Android SDK to build mobile apps for Android phones.

In this workshop we will be looking at the basics of developing mobile Android apps using Java and the Android SDK. You will be introduced to the common components used in professional mobile applications while designing and building your own unique camera app.

To build our app we will be examining a wide range of app components, from simple buttons to complex lists and even animations. Participants will get to design their own layout to create a truly unique app. Using the Android SDK we’ll connect to our phone’s camera to take photos and videos which we can edit with stickers and share with our friends online!

Pre-requisites for the workshop:

  • Students should have a basic understanding of some programming language, preferably an object-oriented language. The language does not need to be Java. The focus of the workshop will be on the Android SDK, not Java.
  • Students need to bring their own laptop to the workshop.
  • Students should install Android Studio 3.2 or later on their laptop prior to the workshop. After installation, run Android Studio to complete the set up.

This workshop is presented in partnership with Shopify.
