Congratulations to the winning teams at the CFM 101 Team Competition

The first-ever CFM course to be offered at the University of Waterloo ended with a portfolio-generation competition. Teams of three first-year CFM students were tasked with coding portfolio-creation applications in the python programming language that were set loose on the market, with final portfolio values determined as of the close on Monday, December 6.

CFM co-director James R. Thompson elected president of Northern Finance Association

Professor James R. Thompson, co-director of the Computing and Financial Management program and a Professor at Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance, has been elected as a president of the Northern Finance Association, a Canadian-based association of researchers in the field of finance.

Co-op harnesses AI in predictive hiring pilot

Starting this fall, Co-operative and Experiential Education will be piloting Plum.io’s predictive hiring platform to help better connect co-op students with the 7,000+ employers that recruit from Waterloo each year. The Plum platform marries artificial intelligence and machine-learning with industrial organizational psychology to give hiring managers an additional, distinct dimension to predict candidates' on-the-job performance.

Royal Bank opens cyber security lab on campus

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is opening a cyber security lab and investing $1.78 million into research at the University of Waterloo to develop advanced cybersecurity and privacy tools.

Online malicious attacks and botnets have become increasingly sophisticated and targeted as people share more and more personal data online. Security teams are often working within legacy hardware systems, across international borders with varying restrictions, and need to prepare for the post-quantum threat. Researchers are poised to create new solutions beyond the current infrastructure, the current encryption systems and the current computing capabilities.
