Dispute Resolution Level 2     
July 19 - 22, 2021 ONLINE from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with two 15 minute breaks.  (Minimum 20 hours training time as required by ADRIO) 


Dispute Resolution Level 1 - Fundamentals  $1,235 + HST  5% discount for those registered and paid four weeks prior.
Dispute Resolution Level 2 - Mediation  $1,410 + HST 5% discount for those registered and paid four weeks prior. 

This dynamic, new workshop series offered in partnership with Agree Inc. is intended for those managers wanting to bring enhanced conflict management and mediation skills into their company or organization, or those looking to enter the mediation profession.
Those who should attend include human resource and labour relations advisors, lawyers, union officials, clerics, educators and others who advise internal and external clients about negotiation, arbitration or mediation. 

This online workshop series also satisfies the educational component of the ADR Institute of Ontario's (ADRIO) membership requirements and can be used toward fulfilling the prerequisites of their designations of Chartered Mediator (C.Med) or Qualified Mediator (Q.Med)

Dispute Resolution Level 1 - Fundamentals

Dispute Resolution Fundamentals provides a solid grounding in the social science that underpins best practices in conflict management.  We discuss and work with:

  • The nature of conflict and relationship between conflict and disputes;
  • How people make sense or “narrate” their stories about conflict;
  • The Dispute Resolution Stairway and ordering of processes;
  • The systemic nature of Interests, Rights & Power based approaches to dispute resolution;
  • Foundational tools for analyzing conflict;
  • Communication skills as applied to conflict coaching and mediation;
  • Models for effective conflict coaching and interest-based mediation;
  • Mediation and coaching role plays and scenarios.

Dispute Resolution Level 2 - Mediation

Dispute Resolution Mediation puts to work everything you have learned in DR1 and adds specific approaches, strategies and techniques together with the opportunity to practice them in a variety of mediation contexts, and role-play scenarios.  You will discuss and work with:

  • Information gathering techniques;
  • Developing an agenda & mediation plan;
  • Understanding the mediation in the context of the legal and dispute resolution systems;
  • When to use caucus (break out meetings) and why;
  • How to encourage movement and realistic settlement expectations;
  • Skills for taking the parties to and overcoming impasse;
  • Creating memoranda of understanding (MOUs);
  • Ethical concerns that mediators face;
  • Building a practice and bringing interest based problem solving into your workplace.

To meet the ADRIO requirements, one must complete both DR1 and DR2 within a twelve month (12) period.  In terms of the Certificate Program, either workshop can be done separately. Both DR1 & DR2 will be scheduled a minimum of twice per year.

Instructional Philosophy: Rick & Heather design and deliver their courses applying the Experiential Learning Cycle (“ELC”), (Experience/Observe, Reflect, Generalize and Apply and Integrate).  This model is recognized by, among others, the St. Francis Xavier Adult Education Program of which Rick is a graduate. 

Experiential Learning ensures that each style of learning is addressed during the course of each learning module. 

  1. Those who learn by doing enjoy the experience/observation phase. 
  2. Those who enjoy reflecting back on their many experiences and parallel concepts gain satisfaction during the reflective stage
  3. Those learners who like to make connections, generalize and devise and test theories appreciate the interpretive/generalizing phase and
  4. Those who are bottom-line, action-oriented decision makers find the application phase most satisfying. 

Approximately 70% of the time in session is spent in discussion, exercises or role-plays with the remainder of the time dedicated to delivering content and the professional language of conflict management & its underpinning theory.
