Meetmehalal.com was one of sixteen graduate teams from across North America selected to compete in the Stu Clark Investment Competition. The two day competition was held on March 14th and 15th in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and comprised of logo, pitch, and business plan competitions with $40,000 in prizes to be won.
Founder and current Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) student Zeshan Khan attended the competition with teammate and fellow MBET student Mahmoud Salama. Zeshan wrote about his experience travelling to and competing in Winnipeg.
The competition: what it's really like
We arrived in Winnipeg on Friday afternoon. Shortly after checking into the hotel, the program began with a reception where we had the opportunity to meet the other teams and the business leaders that were part of the competition. Later that evening, all of the teams gathered in one of the ballrooms at the hotel where our first presentations commenced. Each team had 90 seconds to pitch their business idea to the judges and then answered judges' questions regarding their business logo.
The next morning began with breakfast followed by the first round of business plan presentations. After the awards ceremony later that evening, all of the teams went out for a fun night of curling, a popular sport in Winnipeg.
What I gained at Stu Clark
It was very inspiring to meet so many young, talented graduate students from around the globe and to hear their venture ideas. Through networking with such bright minds, I was able to gain different perspectives and get valuable feedback.
My experience at the competition was very fulfilling. We came back with much more than what we went there with. We gained some key contacts, invaluable experience and best of all, we were able to promote meetmehalal.com to markets that we otherwise would not have reached. We met teams from different provinces and different parts of the United States that are now aware of meetmehalal.com. In fact, both during and in the days after the competition, we saw a spike in not only traffic to our website, but also in membership rates.
We got to engage in the experience of competing in a business competition in front of prominent business leaders, we got the chance to visit a new city, and we got financial support from the Conrad Centre and the Stu Clark Investment Competition to do so. It was definitely a memorable experience!
