Julie is currently in her second year of the MA tourism program in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo. Her thesis project is centred around the complex social interaction that takes place between hosts and tourists in Arctic Regions where tourism is a prominent industry. The purpose of her research is to explore and understand acts of kindness between tourists and hosts in Iceland, and more specifically, to illuminate the extent to which these tourism encounters serve as a symbolic third space of trust and understanding between cultures. Julie's current research interests include Arctic tourism, cultural vulnerability, positive psychology, and backpacking.
