Vinh Nguyen awarded Polanyi Prize for research surrounding refugees in Canada

In November, Renison Professor Vinh Nguyen was awarded the prestigious Polanyi Prize for Literature for his work surrounding the issues that face refugees in Canada. Established by Ontario, the prize includes an award of $20,000.

Renison to offer Waterloo's first Indigenous language course

This fall, Renison University College is offering the University of Waterloo’s first Indigenous language course, Introduction to Kanien’kéha (Mohawk Language). Offered through Renison’s Culture and Language Studies department, in collaboration with the Waterloo Aboriginal Education Centre (WAEC) at St. Paul’s University College, ARTS 190 is intended for University of Waterloo students in any Faculty or discipline with minimal to no knowledge of Kanien’kéha.

Renison professor serves as historical consultant for new “Boat People” Heritage Minute

Renison professor Vinh Nguyen has served as a historical consultant for the most recent Heritage Minute describing the story of the “boat people” refugees that came to Canada from Southeast Asia beginning in the late 1970s. The 60,000 cohort of “boat people” in 1979-1980 was the largest single intake of refugees in Canadian history.

Preserving collective memory of Renison: VoiceThread Project


Tony Tin (Renison Librarian), Daniel Bratton (Renison Faculty), and Kyle Scholz (Centre for Teaching Excellence) have been involved in a VoiceThread pilot project during the Winter 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters. This project, focusing upon the “collective memory of Renison,” has been incorporated into the course work for students in four sections of ENGL 140R. The VoiceThread presentations and related material are now archived on Renison’s Lusi Wong Library’s ”Rspace.
