Sessional Lecturer

Joanne Astley holds an MA in English Literature from Southern Methodist University, as well as a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from the University of Saskatchewan, and a BA from the University of Toronto. Joanne has taught multilingual learners since 1991 in a variety of settings in Japan, the U.S. and Canada. As part of her MA qualification, she was awarded a fellowship to teach undergraduate English Rhetoric, and went onto teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in post-secondary institutions in both the U.S. and Canada. Having lived in four different countries and having met international and language students from all over the world, Joanne is passionate about developing classes at Renison University College that are accessible to learners from diverse cultural backgrounds. To that end, Joanne always encourages students to bring their linguistic, cross-cultural and educational experiences to the classroom as a way to enhance their learning and enjoyment of academic English.
