SUMMARY:The Weaponization of Disinformation in Canada
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Digital disinformation presents a mounting threat to\, and chal
lenge\nfor\, liberal democracies. Global events like Brexit\, electoral\ni
 nterference\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, and the ongoing COVID-19\np
andemic\, have made the abstract threat of digital disinformation into\na
distinct reality. The shifting global balance of power\,\ncharacterized b
 y growing multipolarity\, is unfolding alongside the\nexpansion of tools\,
strategies\, and spaces for adversarial states and\nnon-state actors to e
xpand their influence\, disrupt multilateral\ndiplomacy\, threaten liberal
  democratic norms and values\, and\nde-legitimize a rules-based global ord
er. \n\nThis interdisciplinary workshop will help to bring together aware
 ness\namong the academic community\, industry\, civil society\, and govern
ment\,\noutlining and assessing the evolving threat of digital disinformat
ion\nwhile also providing direction and guidance on how to protect liberal
\ndemocracies like Canada from weaponized digital disinformation.

DESCRIPTION:NATE CARDOZO\, ELECTRONIC FRONTIER FOUNDATION\n\nEncryption is
legal in the Five Eyes countries\, thanks to our victory\nin what’s come
to be known as the Crypto Wars of the 1990s. Computer\nsecurity research
is increasingly viewed as a boon rather than a\nscourge. But time is a cir
cle and once again\, law enforcement and\npolicy makers around the world a
re calling for all that to change. In\nthis presentation\, I will discuss
in brief the history of the first\nCrypto Wars\, and the state of the law
