Doing the Internet's Dirty Work: Commercial Content Moderators as Social Media's Gatekeepers

Faced with mounting pressures and repeated, very public crises, social media firms have taken a new tack since 2017: to respond to criticism of all kinds and from numerous quarters (regulators, civil society advocates, journalists, academics and others) by acknowledging their long-obfuscated human gatekeeping workforce of commercial content moderators.

All Hands on Deck for a Security Incident

Targeted at tech company leadership and product management, the All Hands on Deck workshop, hosted by the University of Waterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Centre, will explore the broad range of roles involved in privacy and security and the growing global skills-shortage in the field. Participants will learn why privacy and security program planning should involve the entire organization and include investment in awareness and training.

There is a growing need for cybersecurity and privacy solutions as the digital economy grows. To create world-leading cryptography and privacy technologies, academia, industry, and government are drawing on transformational research and collaborative energy.

Blockchain technologies will greatly impact all aspects of business, government, and society. Before blockchains can be widely adopted and accepted however, academia and industry need to consider and address the security challenges associated with blockchain technologies.
