Safeguarding science workshop

Faculty members, Research staff, Safety Office staff, Research Ethics staff, and Information Systems & Technology staff involved in research using biological, chemical, radiological, or nuclear materials or technology are invited to join Public Safety Canada (PSC) for the Safeguarding science workshop.

The workshop supports the Government of Canada’s counter proliferation activities and increases security awareness on preventing potential exploitation of scientific and engineering research. The session will explore the risk of accidental or deliberate misuse or weaponization of human pathogens/toxins, nuclear substances, advanced research, materials, and dual-use technology. Please register by March 8th.

1. Presentation outlining:
   • proliferation and dual-use (products, knowledge, or technologies based on research conducted for legitimate purposes that has the potential to be illicitly acquired and/or exploited by others to purposely cause harm or threaten public health or national security) risks associated with chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear research, knowledge, technology, information, and materials,
   • the Government of Canada’s broader counter-proliferation considerations in relation to Canadian research communities, and
   • resources and information to facilitate mitigation against these risks.
