Ecohydrology at the University of Waterloo

Water is our most precious natural resource. The availability and quality of fresh water not only impact human health and wellbeing, but also the functioning of essential ecosystems, including rivers, wetlands, lakes and coastal ecosystems.

Most available fresh water is present as groundwater. Exchanges between groundwater and surface water occur throughout the landscape and support a plethora of key ecosystem services. The multidisciplinary research program in ecohydrology is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the fluxes and transformations of nutrient elements (especially P, N, Si) and metals at the groundwater-surface water interface, and assessing their consequences for the health and functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

Our research team includes biogeochemists, hydrologists, ecologists, environmental chemists and microbiologists, who combine laboratory experiments, field sampling and mathematical modelling.

  1. Apr. 13, 2018New paper by Ecohydrology Researcher in Journal of Hydrology!

    A new publication, co-authored by Dr. Fereidoun Rezanezhad, has been published in Journal of Hydrology. The article, titled "Evaluating the hydraulic and transport properties of peat soil using pore network modeling and X-Ray micro computed tomography", was written in collaboration with Behrad Gharedaghloo, Dr. Jonathan S. Price and Dr. William L. Quinton.

  2. Apr. 12, 2018Fereidoun meets with the Soil and Solid Waste Institute at CRAES in Beijing, China

    Last week, Dr. Fereidoun Rezanezhad visited Beijing, China to meet with members of the Soil and Solid Waste Institute from the China Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), to discuss future collaborations between CRAES and the Water Institute.

  3. Apr. 9, 2018New paper in Journal of Environmental Quality (JEQ) reviews recent advances in agricultural environmental indicators

    Environmental indicators are powerful tools for tracking environmental changes, measuring environmental performance, and informing policymakers. Many diverse environmental indicators are in use or in development. The paper, co-authored by Philippe Van Cappellen, reviews recent advances in agricultural environmental indicators, and identifies areas in which they need to be improved, in particular in order to provide consistent performance and allow for comparisons, both nationally and internationally.
