Prerequisite

Undergraduate probability.

High level description

This is an introductory graduate course on broadband communication networks with a focus on the Internet. The aim of the course is to present the main components of broadband communication networks. The emphasis in the course will be on protocols and performance.

This is an introductory course and of interest to all students who wish to specialize in communications, networking or computer engineering.

Course outline

  1. Introduction to broadband networks
  2. Performance and QoS
  3. Link layer and Local Area Networks (ARP, Ethernet, WiFi, etc.)
  4. Network layer: IPv4, IPv6, ICMP, addressing, routing, etc.
  5. Transport layer: UDP, TCP
  6. Application layer: HTTP, FTP, DNS, etc.

A syllabus will be distributed during the first lecture.
