Economics Minor

The Economics Minor is one of the most popular choice of minors for ECE students, the requirements of which are listed in the Undergraduate Calendar.  The four courses ECON.101, ECON.102, ECON.201, and ECON.202 are acceptable as List-C Complementary-studies Electives (CSEs) for ECE students.  As of the 2013-14 Undergraduate Calendar, the required number of courses has dropped eight (from ten); consequently, if you are graduating in 2014 or later, at this point you would need four additional courses.  The Faculty of Arts requires that only up to half of the courses in the minor may be double counted.  Consequently, you could not count a fifth course towards both the Economics Minor and the required TEs or CSEs of your ECE degree.

Fortunately, the three courses ECON 101, 102 and 361 are offered through distance education; hence, these three courses could be taken during your Co-op Workterms.  You could take the fourth course as an extra course in one term (therefore overloading your schedule) or you may be able to take a course during the evening if you happen to have a Co-op Workterm located near the University of Waterloo.  You may also be able to find a List-2 Natural Sciences Elective (NSE) that you could take during a Co-op Workterm; in which case, you could take a course counting toward your Economics Minor during a regular term without overloading your schedule.  As a final option, you could take this course during the summer term following your 4B term; however, then you will not be graduating with your class.

Please note the following two courses: ECON.311 Mathematical Economics cannot be counted as a CSE, while ECON.405 Topics in Financial Econometrics can be counted as a TE.

Courses counted toward both either CSEs or TEs and the Economics Minor cannot be counted towards other Minors or Options.
