Design and applications of single-photon devices based on waveguides coupled to quantum emitters

Abstract

Realizing interactions between single photons has long been a difficult goal of optical science, given that photons in vacuum do not interact with each other. However, these interactions can be mediated through the use of nonlinearities arising in quantum emitters. This can be enhanced by tight localization of photons and through the use of coherent light-matter interaction techniques. Hollow core waveguides filled with atomic ensembles offer an ideal platform given their low losses, small optical mode areas, large optical nonlinearity, and long interaction times. Our work will explore methods to implement mirrors and cavities within on-chip hollow core ARROW waveguides, and engineer their dispersion properties for enhanced light-matter interaction. We will also look at how waveguide devices coupled to quantum emitters can be used to deterministically extract a single photon from an optical pulse.
