Abstract:

Ultra-High Definition (UHD), High Dynamic Range (HDR), and Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) have become the latest standard for high quality content distribution and consumption. HDR content is superior to standard dynamic range (SDR) UHD content in that it offers the ability to display the full range of luminance that the average human visual system (HVS) can perceive. The WCG aspect also means that more colours can now be displayed to give a more accurate representation of colour within a scene. However, deep investigations on Image and video quality assessment (IQA and VQA) of HDR WCG content are largely lacking in the literature, which is the goal of the current research. 

Our talk will present an investigation into the performance of existing quality assessment methods in regards to evaluating degradation due to compression of UHD HDR WCG content. We will first present the results of a subjective study performed to evaluate the performance of existing SDR quality assessment methods for HDR WCG content in regards to compression. Then we will present the results of three subjective studies performed to evaluate the performance of a variety of colour difference measures, and the impact of background luminance masking on HDR WCG content. Finally, we will present our attempts to incorporate the above results into devising an algorithm for colour quality assessment for HDR WCG content.
