Abstract:

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) represent a huge step forward in a green transportation system, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emission, and reduce the dependence on fossil fuel. Integration of PEVs into the smart will result in a considerable addition to electricity demand. Due to PEV mobility, this demand has a random distribution in space and time among distribution system nodes. Proper integration of charging infrastructure into the smart grid is essential for mass adoption of PEVs. The siting and sizing of charging facilities must ensure not only a satisfactory charging service for PEV users but also a reliable operation of the power system. Planning and operation of PEV charging infrastructure are technically challenging, since PEVs are characterized by their limited driving range, long charging duration, and high charging power, in addition to the randomness in driving patterns and charging decisions of PEV users. Several factors should be considered during the planning and operation of PEV charging infrastructure including PEV characteristics, PEV owner driving behaviors, in addition to the operational constraints of the power system.

In this presentation, we will discuss the integration of PEV charging infrastructure into the smart grid. Furthermore, we will discuss a new siting model the charging facilities. Moreover, we will propose a new capacity planning model for charging infrastructure sizing and a dynamic pricing scheme for charging services.
