Abstract:

Improving the quality of the electrical energy provided to the customers has become an important subject in the recent years.

Evaluating the power quality (PQ) problems has become an essential and necessary by the time when electric power system deregulation was initiated. When the trend of using the non-linear loads was increased since the deregulation started, it has brought an attention to the urgent need to quantify the negative impacts of these loads on the electric power networks. These loads are more sensitive to power quality variations and they create distorted waveforms due to their non- linear currents which result in affecting the operation of the electric power system components. The assets of the electrical network may be exposed to insulation breakdown due to the excessive amount of peak voltage or current which may lead to premature assets aging and failure.

However, having poor power quality affects both customers and utilities by affecting either electrical power system components or customer’s appliances operation. Since it is highly needed to maintain the conditions of the electrical system under the normal operation, it becomes essential to accurately detect and eventually mitigate PQ problems before affecting system operation and lifetime. Therefore, this report provides a comprehensive study on PQ issues started by defining the fundamental concepts of PQ problems and then followed by discussing the techniques of PQ monitoring, detection, classification and mitigation in great details.
