Topic

Characteristics Mode Based MIMO Antenna System Design

Abstract

A characteristics mode based technique to reduce the envelop correlation of a MIMO antenna system for mobile handheld is presented. We demonstrate that two closely spaced antennas can achieve a low correlation when each antenna excites a different set of characteristic modes. A theoretical treatment on the characteristic currents and far field is presented. It is shown experimentally in live air field trials and in controlled MIMO chamber measurements, that a low correlation will improve overall throughput performance.

Biography

Joshua K. H. Wong (S’00 – M’09) received the B.A.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 2002. He received the B.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, in 2004 and 2009 with theses wave propagation and radiation in anisotropic metamaterials.

From 1998 to 2000, he was with the Embedded System Group at BlackBerry (formerly Research in Motion), Waterloo, ON, Canada, where he was engaged in the design and development of non-volatile memory system for mobile handheld devices. From 2000 to 2002, he joined the RF Engineering Group at BlackBerry where he worked on power amplifiers, VCOs and PLL frequency synthesizers for GSM and CDMA mobile handheld devices. In 2008, he joined the antenna group at BlackBerry and is currently serving as the manager of the antenna design team. He is leading a team of 9 engineers with focus on delivering key antenna technologies and working with key customers on defining requirements and specifications for next generation mobile devices.
