Topic

Connected Vehicles: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Using wireless communication technologies, in the future, vehicles can quickly and reliably exchange information and connect to each other and to infrastructure. Connected vehicle technologies will help drivers anticipate potential crashes, and assist users and transportation system operators to make smart and green choices to reduce travel delay and save energy and environment. Connected vehicle technologies create a perfect storm of opportunities to improve road and energy efficiency, mitigate the environmental impact of transportation, and further provide infotainment and telematics services to people on the road. Currently, only a small portion of connected vehicle applications have been realized, and we are lacking enabling tools for many important connected vehicle applications. There are many research issues and challenges remaining unsolved and beckoning further investigation. In this talk, we first brief the PHY and MAC layer research issues in vehicle networks, and then focus on the networking problems, including the theoretical breakthroughs in vehicle network connectivity and delay analysis. Hope they inspire more research efforts and advances, contributing to the new era of connected vehicles.

Biography

Lin Cai received her MASc and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Since 2005, she has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, and she is currently a Professor. Her research interests span several areas in communications and networking, with a focus on network protocol and architecture design supporting emerging multimedia traffic over wireless, mobile, ad hoc, and sensor networks. She has been a recipient of the NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement Grants in 2010 and 2015, respectively, and the best paper awards of IEEE ICC 2008 and IEEE WCNC 2011. She has served as a TPC symposium co-chair for IEEE Globecom'10 and Globecom'13, an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, International Journal of Sensor Networks, and Journal of Communications and Networks (JCN), and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE VTS society.
