OPERATION CHALLENGES FOR THE PORTUGUESE POWER SYSTEM WITH LARGE SCALE INTEGRATION OF WIND POWER GENERATION

Abstract:

Portugal has presently more than 5000 MW in wind power installed capacity, together with a large hydro generation portfolio, taking into account the dimension of the country, - 5400 MW - (that includes run of the river, dams and large reversible hydro pumping stations). Presently more than 60% of the annual energy consumption comes already from renewable power sources, being about 25% from wind power. Solar PV is represents still a small amount - 500 MW, but is expected to increase largely in the coming years. Maximum peak power is around 9000 MW.

The system has recently been facing quite challenging operational conditions, such that in December 2015 and January this year the valley wind power generation already over passed the consumption of the system.  In some days the generation has also already been 100% renewable.

This requires the adoption of operation tools involving wind power forecasting, evaluation of needed operational reserves for the day ahead and the adoption of a combined wind - hydro management strategies where hydro pumping is playing more and more a key role. Other technical problems related with the dynamic robustness of operation will be addressed.

Biography: 

João A. Peças Lopes is Full Professor at Porto University (FEUP) where he teaches in the graduation and post-graduation areas. He is presently Administrator (Member of the Board) of INESC TEC, one of the largest R&D interface institutions of the UP. His main domains of research are related with large scale integration of renewable power sources, power system dynamics, microgeneration and micro grids, smart metering and electric vehicle grid integration. He is author or co-author of more than 250 papers and co-editor and co-author of the book “Electric Vehicle Integration into Modern Power Networks” edited by Springer. He is Fellow from IEEE.
