Title

Measurement Based Voltage Stability Monitoring and Control

Abstract

The presentation will address the real-time monitoring and control algorithms that assess voltage stability conditions, taking into account the short-term as well long-term time scales. For long-term stability, multi-linear regression models are proposed to capture the relationship between reactive power reserves and voltage stability margin. For short-term voltage stability a model free approach based on Lyapunov exponents is investigated. A real-time test bed with hardware in the loop simulation with PMU integration is setup to test the short-term voltage stability monitoring.

Speaker's biography

Professor Ajjarapu obtained his PhD from the University of Waterloo in 1986. Thereafter he joined Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, USA, and currently holds the David C. Nicholas Chair Professorship. His current research is in the area of reactive power planning, voltage stability analysis, and nonlinear voltage phenomena. Professor Ajjarapu has served as the chair of the IEEE Voltage Stability Focus Group and has received IEEE award as a member of one of the edited monographs on Voltage Stability (received outstanding technical report award). He has also served as Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and IEEE Power Engineering Letters.
