Topic

Mining Contexts of Passive Entities from Radio Frequency Sources

Abstract

In the recent decade, with the ubiquitous distribution of mobile device integrated with a suite of sensors including accelerometer, microphone, GPS, WiFi, camera, digital compass and gyroscope, the device can provide a variety of contexts, such as user’s physical location, activities and orientation, etc. However, despite the huge progress in this research area, there is still much more to be investigated. For instance, 1) most of existing solutions require wearing a device, then one could ask what can be done with the absence of such a device; and 2) the accuracy of RF-based indoor localization is constrained by the unpredictable characteristics of radio signals in indoor environments and hence needs to be improved. In this seminar, we present possible ways of improvement to unobtrusively sense such human contexts as locations and activities using RF signals. We first present a passive FM-based activity recognition framework, which enables detect several activities of a subject. Then, upon the RF passive detection framework, we introduce an attention monitoring system from ambient FM radio stations. Furthermore, we propose a WiFi-based passive localization system. Unlike conventional indoor localization system, which utilizes received signal strength indication (RSSI) from WiFi as input measurements, our system leverages channel state information (CSI) for positioning and tracking of a passive entity. Both systems are unobtrusive approaches for context awareness using RF signals, with which, we believe a large range of applications can be achieved without equipping the sensed person with any transceiver.
