"Smart Electric Grid: Few R&D Challenges and Impact of Renewables on System Stability"

Professor S. C. Srivastava

Department of Electrical Engineering

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India

Date: Tuesday, 4th June 2019

Time: 2 – 3:30 PM

Room: EIT 3151/53

Abstract: The emerging smart grid has increased the share of renewables, energy storage, EV charging stations, and microgrids at different levels in the network. The large penetration of renewables, being intermittent in nature, is posing system stability and power quality concerns, which requires proper compensation and controls. The operation, control and protection philosophy of the emerging smart grid has posed several R&D challenges.

This talk will first discuss about various smart grid components, associated technical challenges and smart grid initiatives and collaborative projects. It will also briefly present some of the results obtained on the practical grid network showing impact of large wind penetration and dynamic loads on system stability, along with planning of controls to improve the system stability under such scenarios.

Speaker: Prof. S. C. Srivastava received the B. Tech. degree from Banaras Hindu University and the Ph.D. from IIT Delhi in India. He worked at Engineers India Limited, New Delhi, India, during 1976-1988 in its Project Engineering and Engineering Technology Development divisions. Since 1988 he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, and a full Professor since 1995. He has served as the Head of Electrical Engineering Department, the Dean R&D, and the Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur. He has been a Visiting Professor at Mississippi State University, USA (2008-2009), and AIT Bangkok (1996-97). He has held the P. K. Kelkar Chair and Ministry of Labour and Employment Chair Professor positions at IIT Kanpur.

Prof. Srivastava has supervised 28 Ph.D. and 64 Masters theses, published more than 300 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include power system security, synchrophasor applications, electricity markets, ac/dc microgrids and smart grid.

Prof. Srivastava is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineers (India) and IETE (India), and a Senior Member of IEEE. He has served in the governing council and expert committee of several government organizations and utilities in India. Currently he is leading the Consortium from India in the joint Indo-US project UI-ASSIST on Smart Grid and Storage.
