Abstract:
For most humans it is “natural” to interact with other humans and in particular to use non-verbal communication as a mean to convey intention, emotion and to give a purpose to an interaction. This talk presents some of our latest advances in human science and in particular to model and to understand human behavior and non-verbal communication through the dynamics of motions. Our research results are applied to designing human-machine interactions and human-robot interactions to create awareness: social awareness, emotional awareness, health awareness… and aim at creating a seamless intelligent environment where humans and machines can share the same space and collaborate. The presentation entwines concepts from the fields of AI, robotics,
biomechanics, psychology and sociology.


Biography:
Gentiane Venture is a French Roboticist who has been working in academia in Tokyo, Japan for more than 10 years. After graduating from Ecole Centrale de Nantes and obtaining a PhD from University of Nantes in 2000
and 2003 respectively, she works at the French Nuclear Agency and at the University of Tokyo. She started in 2009 with Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology where she has established the GVlab, an
international research group working on human science and robotics. The researchers at the GVlab try to encompass human motion dynamics and non-verbal communication into complex intelligent robot behavior
design to achieve personalized human machine interaction. The work of her group is highly interdisciplinary by collaborating with therapists, sociologists, psychologists, physiologists, philosophers, neuro-scientists, designers worldwide.
