Beyond Bitcoin: The future of blockchain

Originally built as a way to secure cryptocurrency transactions, blockchain is a digital platform that verifies and records exchanges. Blockchains are global networks that can have millions of users, each adding information/data which is secured through cryptography. This creates an indisputable history of these transactions that cannot be modified by a single user, eliminating opportunities for fraud, and it is this feature that has some heralding blockchain as as a way of increasing cybersecurity.

Shopify Director and Waterloo ECE Alumna, Ella Hilal, on being a woman in the tech world

 

Women are important in technology, but it’s not exactly a cake walk being one in the industry. Just ask Ella Hilal, the director of data science at Shopify.

Hilal has been in Waterloo for nearly 15 years, completing her PhD in engineering at the University of Waterloo. She was one of about three women in her class of 40 and dealing with a pregnancy.
