Biomedical Engineering 2021

Chelsea Martin

Hi I’m Hannah. I am from Calgary, Alberta. Outside of school, I love to dance and be active.  I hold my Level 2 NCCP certification for coaching gymnastics, and I love teaching the kids the sport of gymnastics because I am so passionate about it. I also enjoy volleyball and track and field and participated on those teams in high school. I really enjoy music; I played classical violin and I love to sing. On top of this, I am obviously a bit of a nerd, and I really enjoy participating in math contests. As a Type 1 Diabetic, it is really important to me to prove to myself and the world that a disease cannot limit my potential and define who I am.  There are always obstacles, but the only thing that will ever hold us back is ourselves. Therefore, I always try to find new ways to challenge myself and try new experiences.

Why I chose Waterloo Engineering...

First of all, I chose Waterloo Engineering for the program because very few universities have a full undergraduate program in biomedical engineering. Direct entry into the program was a huge draw for me as it meant I could focus my studies starting in my first year, and I wouldn’t have to compete with other students in my first year for a position in my desired program. Co-op is a great aspect of Waterloo Engineering as it will provide hands on learning experience that will be extremely desirable to an employer post graduation. Finally, I chose Waterloo Engineering because of its reputation, and the countless opportunities it provides its students.

I wish I had known before I came...

How personal the program and engineering at Waterloo is.  Because of the small class sizes, the professors make an effort to get to know us, and the class becomes a community.  It is an extremely supportive environment.

I chose my program because...

It is the perfect blend of math, science, and the study of the human body.  After first hand experience with the impact a biomedical engineered device can make, I knew that biomedical engineering would give me the tools to make a positive difference in people’s lives. Also, as a gymnastics coach, I love the study of human movement and the human body.  Biomedical Engineering at Waterloo allows me to combine this love of mine with my love for math and science.

What I like best about my program...

I love the class environment. The small class size makes it a really supportive community. The classes are really interesting, and I am learning a ton of new things. I love the challenge in this program because there is a lot of support and the professors and TA’s are always willing to help.

Favorite Extra-Curricular...

I love shoe-tag classes at Waterloo! You buy one tag at the beginning of the term that is good for all the fitness classes. This is a great way to work out, stay healthy, de-stress, and meet some new people.

Highlights of first year experience...

I love that at Waterloo you get to meet so many people from all over the country and the world. It is so interesting to here about different cultures and traditions, and share our Waterloo experience together.
