My name is Josh, and I am a first year chemical engineering student here at Waterloo! I come from a small town called Parry Sound in Northern Ontario, so adjusting to life in Waterloo has been a big change for me! Some of my favourite things to do in my spare time are playing guitar, fishing, and camping!
Waterloo Engineering in one word:
I chose Waterloo Engineering because:
Waterloo's cooperative education program provides so many new opportunities that you can't find anywhere else. Also, Waterloo's engineering program is ranked as one of the best schools in Canada. A great reputation, and a lot of great opportunities, lead to an easily-made decision when choosing my school!
The best thing about my program is:
Learning how to apply concepts from my favourite courses. One of my favourite subjects in high school was chemistry, and now that I am a chemical engineering student I am learning how to apply concepts I learn in chemistry, to solving real problems! The work is harder than high school, but it is so much more rewarding!
My first coop work term will be in May 2018. I would love to get a position working in a chemical processing plant, but I am open-minded to whichever opportunities present themselves! There are too many to focus on just one!
I wish I had known before I came:
I wish that I knew just how important it is to really manage your time. My first couple weeks of class could have gone better if I knew this. It's important to study, but it's also important to have some leisure time. No matter how hard your courses are, never feel ashamed to take a mental health break! In the long run, it'll benefit you more than that extra couple hours of studying would have.
Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:
- Engineering Ambassadors
- Volunteer at Slate Church
- Intramural Dodgeball Team
One more thing about me:
I love logic puzzles, and having friendly educated debates.
