Introduce yourself briefly:
Hi, I’m Maggie! You might find me telling lame puns in engineering classrooms, engaging in a heated debate over the beauty of proofs, or pondering over the earthworms on the sidewalk. Please come and say hi C: I don’t byte!
Waterloo Engineering in one word:
I choose Waterloo Engineering because:
I’ve always enjoyed tinkering around with technology. In my high school robotics class, when I was first introduced to Arduino, I fell in love with all the possibilities that a microcontroller can create. That led to me pursuing computer engineering since it incorporates both hardware and software. Waterloo Engineering provides the opportunity to be challenged academically, and to integrate the school knowledge with coop experience.
The best thing about my program is:
The people. I’ve learned so much from my fellow classmates, from how to set up a server to how to ballroom dance. It’s amazing to be surrounded by peers who are so passionate about technology and the subject matter.
About my Co-op experience:
As someone studying Computer Engineering, I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to work in the software or hardware industry, so I decided to explore the entire spectrum, hardware, firmware, and software. I’ve designed electronic puzzles for escape rooms, delved into details of Java syntax through static code analysis, developed in C++ to integrate cameras into under water laser scanners, and worked on LiDARs for self-driving Ubers!
I wish I had known before I came:
Waterloo Engineering is what you make of it, it’s challenging, but the challenges are so worth it. Academics and competition isn’t everything. Try things outside of your comfort zone and see where it lands you… Singapore? San Francisco? Amsterdam?
Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:
- Ontario Women in Engineering:
- Waterloo/Ontario/Canada Engineering Competition:
- Our professor featured us in his admission blog (an honour I would never have dreamed of)! https://theradtoengineering.com/2019/03/21/canadian-engineering-competition/
- Ballroom dancing:
- A Capella
- Academic Representative
A fun project I’ve completed:
I see university as a 5-years-long project of self improvement :), I’m currently on the phase of learning to take time to exercise and balance academics with caring for friends.

One more thing about me:
I’m a fan of studio ghibli movies :)
