Mechatronics Engineering 2021

Owen Minnes

Hello! My name is Owen and I am currently in my 2A term of Mechatronics Engineering. What I especially like about Mechatronics at Waterloo is the fact that everyone in the program shares a common interest and fascination for robotics and technology. There is a sense of community within my cohort which I think makes Waterloo engineering unique. Right from the start, we have had plenty of opportunities to put our engineering skills and knowledge from courses to work through labs, a two-day event called Tron Days, and multiple design projects. I am so looking forward to everything that is still to come throughout my time in the program! Outside of school I have a passion for musical theatre, I enjoy playing guitar, and love camping, geocaching, canoeing, skiing and a variety of other outdoor activities.

Why I chose Waterloo Engineering...

The biggest draw for me was the fact that a large majority of the people in the program are truly interested in the subject and share a desire to be innovators throughout their time here and beyond. I came to this realization when I visited on a shadow day during my grade 12 year. I would highly recommend the shadow day program to anyone considering Waterloo Engineering. Another aspect of the program which particularly appealed to me was the co-op. Though I have not yet completed a co-op term I am looking forward to the opportunity to get a “taste” of the types of work a mechatronics engineer can do. This will both complement my university studies and give me a better idea of what I will eventually want to pursue.

I chose my program because...

I have always had a passion for creating things and figuring out how things work. I like looking at the mechanical aspect to various machines and pieces of technology. In high school, I broadened this interest when I started taking programming courses and developed an interest in computer logic and problem solving. I chose the mechatronics program as it combines these interests. In addition to this, mechatronics engineering is very applicable today and is constantly being used to develop innovative solutions to a wide variety of problems globally.

Waterloo Engineering in one word...

Exciting.

Favourite Moment...

Hanging out with friends in my program, during the weekends and during lunch time. Despite the heavy workload there is always time for some fun and relaxation!

Highlights of my first year experience...

Orientation week was lots of fun and provided a great opportunity to meet people and enjoy the events without having to worry about school. There were many fun activities going on throughout the week and I would definitely recommend making the most of it!
