Mechatronics Engineering 2021

Sanjeevani LakshmivarahanHi! I am going into my fourth-year of Mechatronics with a minor in AI. I have completed co-ops in Mechanical, Product Management, Software (primarily for robotics systems). I have been on various design teams and worked in different areas in Ontario and California. I love meeting new people, so feel free to reach out!

Waterloo Engineering in one word:

I choose Waterloo Engineering because:

In Grade 12, I found it difficult to narrow my interests. I knew the co-op program would be a great way to both gain real experience, working as part of companies of various sizes in various fields and countries. Waterloo Engineering seemed like the perfect way to experiment and find out what I wanted to ultimately pursue.

The best thing about my program is:

I love the program for the flexibility it gives me in being able to pursue as many different fields for co-op. There is just enough breadth and depth that students can optionally pursue those fields more deeply through design teams, side projects, or co-ops. This allows those who may not know exactly what they want to do, get enough exposure to try and figure that out.

About my Co-op experience:

There are so many different types of companies and positions, not to mentions fields and locations to work in. I have friends who have done international co-ops all over the world, and the fact that we have the opportunity to both refine our practical job-search and on-the-job skills, while being students, is invaluable. Now that I approach graduation, I immensely appreciate that foundation the co-op program has given me.

I wish I had known before I came:

Most people don't have it all figured out. There may be those who know exactly what they want to do, what they are skilled in, and have been working on that since they were children. But, that is not the only kind of person you will meet, nor who you have to be. It takes time to figure out what you want to do. Start somewhere, try your best, and if that doesn't spark your passion, it IS OKAY to pivot to something else. Eventually, something will stick.

Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:

UW Hip-Hop, Tron Mentor Chats, Class Representative, Ambassadors, and various design teams over the years

One more thing about me:

I helped found the Tron Mentor Chats program ^_^ (
