Waterloo Engineering in one word:
Unexpected
I choose Waterloo Engineering because:
I could go into the program I wanted to right away, instead of general first year. As well, it’s a prestigious program that is regarded as being one of the best in the world. Also, coop has helped my job prospecting immensly
The best thing about my program is:
That it is small. More focus towards a positive student experience from professors when classes are small, and you get to know your classmates super well. I am friends with almost everyone in my program now!
About my Co-op experience:
A wide range of different coops is honestly the best type of experience. Being able to understand different branches of geological engineering has made me more knowledgeable about the industry, and has also made me realize what I would see myself doing in the future. Ive worked in 6 different companies, that all did something a little different, from borehole logging to hydrogeological testing and even geohazards. I probably have a million stories from each of my co-ops, so if you are interested about it hit me up!
I wish I had known before I came:
That it is not as serious as its made out to be. Doesn’t mean its not hard, but the opportunities to have fun and meet great people are always there. Engineering Stereotypes are not right!
Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:
Intramurals, Canadian Geotechnical Society
A fun project I’ve completed:
My capstone project, which I am still working on! Got to design an adit tunnel near a real life dam in BC that will prevent possible landslides crashing into the dam reservoir!
One more thing about me:
Being a black student in a predominantly non-POC program is a little daunting at first. But I realized that there are lots of support groups for POC and other minorities here in Waterloo Engineering! Got to meet other people like me and being able to share stories about day to day experiences honestly helps a lot!
